The IRIS infrastructure itself will promote the participation to EU calls and calls by international projects (present example: EIC at BNL-USA) in various sectors, like green energy, medical, space and fundamental research sectors, enhancing the possibility of success of each single Institute, with a workload and economic return for IRIS itself.
WP8 Green Superconducting Line at Zero Emissions
The Green Superconducting Line is a short length (130-150 m) demonstrator that could be used also as HVDC back-to-back system in a suitable power substation, once properly qualified. To our knowledge such a line is an absolute breakthrough, alone is worth special attention. It could become an important brick for green energy for a sustainable growth society: in addition, the use of 20 K operation allows to couple the SC line with liquid hydrogen (LH) cooling technology. The possibility of coupling zero dissipative transport of current with transport of LH as an energy vector is an asset of enormous potential. This line, besides being a demonstrator, is a necessary and key element of the IRIS infrastructure situated in Salerno, indeed, as will be discussed in the pertinent WP. We underline that a superconducting line, at lower values of voltage and power, will be a critical element for future particle colliders to reduce power consumption and for safety and access to the tunnel. The High Luminosity LHC project has made a fundamental investment by designing and prototyping the extremely high current (with low power transmission) superconducting link mentioned above: so, the SC line we propose is an ambitious but also realistic goal inside the period of the project.
